Psychology Fees & Medicare Rebates

We aim to make our fees clear before you begin psychology sessions with ELD Psychology.

You do not need a referral to see one of our psychologists. However, if you are eligible and would like to claim a Medicare rebate, you will need a valid referral from your GP or psychiatrist.

Standard psychology appointments are approximately 50 minutes. Initial appointments may take up to 60 minutes.

Medicare Rebates

With a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) you can claim a Medicare rebate of $149.05 per session with a Clinical Psychologist for up to 10 sessions per calendar year. To obtain this rebate, you will require a referral from your General Practitioner (GP) or a Psychiatrist. For more information visit the Services Australia website.

A valid referral letter from your GP or psychiatrist is required prior to your initial appointment in order to receive a medicare rebate. A referral letter must include the following:

  • the patient's name, date of birth and address

  • the patient's symptoms or diagnosis

  • a list of any current medications

  • the number of services/sessions the patient is being referred for (typically an initial 6 sessions)

  • a statement about whether the patient has had a Mental Health Treatment Plan or a Psychiatrist Assessment and Management Plan prepared

  • GP’s name, signature and provider number

If your referral is not valid, unfortunately a Medicare rebate cannot be processed for your session. If this occurs, we recommend contacting your GP to request an updated referral letter, or speaking with our team and we can assist in liaising with your GP to help ensure the correct documentation is in place.

Private Health Insurance

You may also be able to claim part of the cost of psychology appointments through your private health insurance.

Rebates vary between insurers and levels of cover, so we recommend contacting your health fund directly to check your eligibility.

You cannot generally claim both a Medicare rebate and a private health insurance rebate for the same psychology appointment.

We cannot process transactions with private health insurance. However, at the conclusion of each session, you can organise rebates with your insurance provider. We will provide you with an invoice after each session via email, which will have the information needed to assist with this process.

Cancellation Fees

Since the scheduling of an appointment involves a reservation of time specifically for you, a minimum of 48 hours (two days' notice) is required for rescheduling or cancelling an appointment. Late cancellation or failure to attend with less than 24 hours’ notice will attract the full fee. For appointments cancelled with 24 to 48 hours’ notice, 50% of the full fee will be charged. Please also note, cancellation fees cannot be claimed through Medicare or your health fund. 

Please note that our practice administration is closed on Saturdays and Sundays, therefore, to cancel a Monday or Tuesday appointment without penalty, cancellations must be made by 5pm Friday of the previous week. 

Psychological Assessment Fees

ELD Psychology also provides psychological assessments for children, adolescents and adults, including assessment for:

  • ADHD

  • Autism

  • Specific learning disorders

  • Cognitive functioning

  • Functional capacity

Assessment costs vary depending on the type and complexity of the assessment required.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • No. You can make an appointment privately without a Mental Health Treatment Plan or referral.

    You will, however, require an eligible referral if you wish to claim a Medicare rebate.

  • ELD Psychology is a private psychology practice and does not routinely bulk bill. Clients pay the appointment fee and eligible clients can claim the applicable Medicare rebate.

  • Potentially. Psychology benefits depend on your individual private health insurance policy. We recommend checking directly with your health fund.

  • Eligible clients may be able to receive Medicare rebates for telehealth psychology services where the relevant Medicare requirements are met.

  • Eligible clients can currently access Medicare rebates for up to 10 individual mental health treatment services per calendar year.

    Your GP or other referring medical practitioner will determine the appropriate referral pathway and may need to review your progress before providing referrals for further sessions.

  • A Clinical Psychologist is a registered psychologist who has completed postgraduate training in clinical psychology and has also completed the supervised registrar requirements needed to hold an endorsement in clinical psychology.

    A Clinical Psychology Registrar is also a fully registered psychologist who has completed an approved postgraduate qualification in clinical psychology, but is still completing a period of supervised practice and professional development required to gain endorsement as a Clinical Psychologist.

    Both can provide psychological assessment and therapy within their areas of competence. Clinical Psychology Registrars work under Board-approved supervision while completing their registrar program.
